technology of f22 raptor

Integrated Weapons & Defense Systems
  • AIM-9 air-to-air missile fired while the F-22 was maneuvering by rolling 60 degrees per second
    • No other program has tested firing a missile while accomplishing such aircraft maneuvers
  • All 52 missile tests required prior to IOT&E complete
  • First JDAM separation test complete
  • Gun system tests successful
  • Chaff and flare countermeasures are certified

Dominant Air-to-Air Capability
  • The F-22 is capable of carrying existing and planned air-to-air weapons. These include a full complement of medium-range missiles, such as the AIM-120C advanced medium range air-to-air missile (AMRAAM), and short-range missiles such as the AIM-9 Sidewinder. The F-22 also will have a modernized version of the proven M61 internal gun and growth provisions for other weapons. The aircraft also will be capable of carrying Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMs) and other ground-attack weapons
  • Combination of revolutionary capabilities gives F-22 unmatched first look, first shot, first kill capability

Substantial Air-to-Ground Capability
  • The F-22 has a secondary role to attack surface targets. The aircraft will be capable of carrying two 1,000-pound Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAMs) internally and will use on-board avionics for navigation and weapons delivery support

Armament
  • Houses six radar-guided AIM-120C advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles (or two 1,000-lb class GBU-32 Joint Direct Attack Munitions in place of four of the AIM-120Cs) in the main weapons bay
  • Carries two heat-seeking AIM-9 Sidewinder short-range air-to-air missiles in side weapons bays (one in each bay)
  • A single M61A2 20-mm multibarrel cannon
  • Four external stations can carry additional stores (weapons or fuel tanks)
  • Gun system (Linear Linkless Ammunition Handling System) capable of feeding ammunition at rate of 100 rounds per second
